We currently have a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to support the Principal Investigator in the first six months of a two-year AHRC-funded project titled Dancing with Memory. You will be responsible for aspects of the project related to French-to-English translation and communication with French-speaking experts.
You will translate primary sources from nineteenth-century French to English. You will also interpret and translate during an archival visit to Paris, assist with organising and hosting the first two Dancing with Memory seminars and help forge relationships between the project and French academic and non-academic communities.
You will possess an excellent knowledge of French language and a thorough understanding of current professional and academic translation practices including the ability to translate nineteenth-century French into English. 1st July – 31st December 2014Campus base: Bishop Otter CampusFunction of the Post:To support the Principal Investigator in the first six months of a two-year AHRC-funded project titled Dancing with Memory. The project will investigate the relationships between popular dance and cultural memory, focusing on the case study of the cancan. The Research Assistant would be responsible for aspects of the project related to French-to-English translation and communication with French-speaking experts. The role would also provide opportunities for the Research Assistant’s career development by assisting the Principal Investigator with research event co-ordination and working with the Principal Investigator to develop her/his own research trajectories in relation to the project content.Principal Accountabilities1. Translate primary sources from nineteenth-century French to English to a professional standard suitable for academic publication.2. Interpret and translate during a two-week archival visit to Paris with the Principal Investigator.3. Undertake up to ten visits to the British Library Newspaper Collection to translate journalistic sources.4. Assist the Principal Investigator with organising and hosting the first two Dancing with Memory seminars.5.
