“From gestural remains to a conceptualisation of choreography in Samuel Beckett’s late work”.
This paper considers Samuel Beckett’s work in relation to the choreographic in the last two decades of his life. Shifting the focus away from his use of gestural remains in the experimental prose of the "Residua" of the seventies, in which the description of infinitesimal movements leak through the repression of restricted spaces, I move on to explore the way Beckett builds a choreographic and gestural vocabulary/phrasal dynamics (in both late prose and TV plays) in the eighties, moving through Quad and Ohio Impromptu towards a theorisation (or should we say theatricalisation?) of "going on" in anticipation of death – to clarify the enactment of the mourning of oneself in oneself. I'll talk mainly about two prose pieces, "Stirrings Still", and "Ill Seen Ill Said" and three TV plays, "Ghost Trio", "Eh Joe" , and finish with the "sacramental" gestures of "Nacht und Träume".
Also, Professor Jones will hold an informal seminar with students on Thursday morning at 11:30am in room 307 of the Dance Department (1700 North Broad Street).
And the same week, Lucia Ruprecht will present an AIR talk on Josephine Baker in the Chapel of the Four Chaplins on Tuesday, April 1st at noon. All are welcome and light refreshments will be served.
