Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Performing Arts Practice and Theory
Northumbria University Northumbria University is seeking to appoint Lecturers/ Senior Lecturers in Performing Arts who have particular expertise in one or more of the following areas:

- Acting, Voice and Performance Techniques
- Playwriting/Writing for Performance
- 20th and 21st Century Performance Practices

Performing Arts at Northumbria currently consists of three dynamic practice based programmes (Drama and Applied Theatre, Drama and Scriptwriting, and Performance) which involve the study of performance through the integration of theory and practical exploration. The successful candidate will be joining a highly research active team whose research interests include; Disability and Performance, Digital Performance, Verbatim Theatre, Contemporary Performance Festivals and New Writing which are grouped under two main research clusters; Biographical and Documentary Theatre and Performance and Philosophy. Our team consists of high profile practice based and academic researchers.
Based in our city centre campus in Newcastle upon Tyne, Performing Arts boasts a range of high quality rehearsal spaces, studios and two campus theatres. We are embedded within a range of professional artistic, cultural and community organisations where we produce professional and student led events, festivals and performances. These include; Live Theatre, Northern Stage, Dance City, Gateshead International Festival of Theatre, Helix Arts and Mind the Gap.

Staff research feeds into a range of exciting events and performance activity, current examples of which include:

- GIFT (Gateshead International Festival of Theatre). GIFT was founded in 2011 by Dr Kate Craddock (Senior Lecturer, Northumbria), and has become a firmly established annual event. A range of exciting work has been shown at GIFT from practitioners across the world. See link for details:

- The Tin Ring. A solo performance work created collaboratively by Jane Arnfield (Director of Fine Art Programmes, Northumbria), and Mike Alfreds (co-founder of Shared Experience and Visiting Fellow at Northumbria University). This performance is based on the testimony of Zdenka Fantlova, who survived internment in six Nazi death camps. The piece has been performed internationally since 2011. See link for details:

- The GB Project. A new performance work created by Kate Craddock and Steve Gilroy (Senior Lecturers, Northumbria) in association with Northern Stage, inspired by maverick British adventurer Gertrude Bell. The work premiered this year at as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Northern Stage Collaboration: In the last academic year Northumbria University initiated a collaboration with Northern Stage. As a result the undergraduate degree show was held at Northern Stage, which included two productions and a variety of other performative activities. We hope to build on this collaboration in the coming year.
Live Theatre Partnership: Within the last year, a new partnership has been established between Northumbria University and Live Theatre, one of the country's leading New Writing venues. See link for details:

Last year we moved up 36 places to 26 in the Guardian league tables and our provision has been strongly endorsed by our own students through the NSS with our programmes averaging over 90% overall student satisfaction. We are an ambitious and forward looking team and strive towards:

If appointed, you will have opportunities to develop and consolidate existing research interests, initiate and participate in multi-and inter-disciplinary initiatives within the wider Department of Arts and beyond; generate research income through supported bids to national research councils and other funding bodies; build and strengthen external partnerships; be alert to impact opportunities; and contribute generally to the Department's vibrant research culture. In teaching, the successful candidate will consolidate and help expand our undergraduate teaching provision by contributing to core modules across the degree and develop new research-led modules.
