The Department of Theatre Studies of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is offering the Master’s in International Dramaturgy geared at training future generations of professionals in the various fields of the performing arts. This 18-month Master’s programme taught in English has been developed for students who have a specific interest in working across cultural, linguistic, social and national boundaries.
Preparing the next generation of international professionals in the performing arts
Current theatre and performance practice is increasingly focused on international and cross-cultural collaborations, with festivals and performance venues hosting artists and groups from across the world, and artists frequently traversing borders. Students of the MA in International Dramaturgy at the UvA receive training in those aspects of cultural interpretation, adaptation and mediation that are essential to working in a wide range of international, cross-cultural contexts, whether in experimental small-scale production processes or in international theatre and performance venues and groups.
Cultural exchange with partner universities abroad
Cultural exchange on an academic as well as practical artistic level is a crucial part of the curriculum of the Master's in International Dramaturgy. Students have the opportunity to study or do internships aboard for 3 to 6 months. The programme cooperates with diverse universities inside and outside Europe, including: the University of Cape Town (South Africa), the University of São Paulo (Brazil), the Freie Universität Berlin (Germany), the University of Gent (Belgium) and the University of Stockholm (Sweden).
Career prospects
Given the growing demand for cultural professionals with the necessary skills to work in transnational and multilingual settings, the programme offers a qualification that is grounded in theatre and performance, but with a wide applicability in other domains of the arts and culture. Graduates of the International Dramaturgy programme will be in a position to work in diverse cultural, artistic and/or academic fields.
