The First International Congress on Philosophy of Dance will be held at the Complutense University of Madrid the 28th, 29th and 30th of June 2017.
The organizers aim to bring together research on the intersection between the disciplines “philosophy” and “dance”. This event aims to create a space to foster synergies between these two fields, with the goal of developing its own field of research.
In contrast to dance research which mainly focuses on the analysis of dance from a descriptive point of view and study dance from an historical, social, anthropological or ethnological perspective, the organizers want to encourage another research perspective. Thus, the organizers will consider dance as a philosophical space that promotes critical analysis within the field of philosophy. For this reason, dance works not just as an object for reflection, a philosophy about dance, but also as a philosophical category, temperament or style: dance as philosophy.
Although the organizers accept all kinds of proposals sharing this awareness, some possible guidelines are:
- Philosophy and dance with regards to different philosophical schools of thought
- Philosophical analysis of different dance trends and the problem of artistic movements within dance theory: classicism, romanticism, modernism...
- Convergences and divergences between aesthetic theory and political theory of dance.
- Phenomenology of dance.
- Feminisms, queer, postcolonial theory and intersectionality in the philosophy of dance.
- The problem of authorship and form in dance: choreography and improvisation. Dance as a philosophical and epistemological inquiry
- The classical problem of dualism and the communication among substances: theory-practice, soul-body, subject-object.
- Tension and/or dialogues between the Classic and the Modern.
- Philosophical approach on dance theorists: Feuillet, Noverre, Graham, Duncan, Cunningham, Laban... Various topics on the philosophical character of dance
- Oppositions, mystification and hybridization among popular culture, popularized culture and high culture.
- Street dance: interactions among dance, industrial context and city.
- Universality and colonization of academic technique.
- The status of research in dance and its institutionalization: problems of legitimization and integration of knowledge of dance at universities and conservatories. Philosophical implications between dance and other disciplines
- Writing movement: relation between dance and text understood in its different forms of writing (pictorial notation, photography, cinema, sculpture...)
- Dance boundaries: performance, somatic education, expanded dramaturgies...
- Statute of the dance technique: ways of educating the body, movement disciplines, sport...
- Philosophical intersections between dance and music.
